When it comes to making ourselves employable, the really big issue that we have trouble grasping has to do with our rate of learning. Individuals who stay curious and who are interested in growing are always the ones who are the most employable.
It’s becoming increasingly common within the employment sphere to say that the most important thing is to hire attitude. I see ‘attitude’ as a combination of capability and character. Someone with character is someone who’s really pushing on with their life, in contrast to a person with low energy and lots of self-pity.
Speaking specifically about post-redundancy, the main challenge is coping with the loss of routine. You’re suddenly jolted out of your daily routine of going to work and it’s important to replace that instead of falling into bad habits.
Replacing your routine does require you to have a plan in regards to what you’re going to spend your time doing. What you do doesn’t have to be directly related to work or job searching - if you’ve been feeling out of shape, you might decide to start an exercise regime.
Whatever you decide to do, aim to put in place a routine that will make you employable. Employability is not just about your mind, it’s also about how you look and how healthy you are.
