We all know the negative reputations the footballer’s wife and girlfriend (WAG) has gained over the past ten years, but there is a new generation of WAGs that are changing the way we perceive them. In fact, there is a lot to learn from the modern WAG that we can transfer into the business arena.
Here are a few of the top qualities and skills we can learn from a WAG to help you get noticed for the job of your dreams!
- Dress impeccably – How often do you catch Posh on a bad dress day? With fashion being what she gets noticed for, even designing her own line of clothing, Victoria Beckham presents herself in the world she wants to get recognised in. Dressing for your role is important in showing your interviewer visually how well you could fit in to the company.
- Show prospective employers how your experiences will benefit the organisation – Take Cheryl Cole: Singer, Make up Model, Hair Model, Judge – she has it all under her belt but whilst she is first and foremost a singer, she has become equally as famous as an X Factor judge which has landed her a L’Oreal contract. Showing how she is ambitious outside of her domain has opened many more doors to Cheryl. If you’re trying to transition into a new career, be prepared to demonstrate that your skills and ambition are adaptable to the role.
- What does your online profile say about you? – Every WAG gets written about. Coleen Rooney even has a dedicated fansite, but she knows the value of a positive image in her career and always does her best to behave professionally in public so any online coverage of her is above reproach. Employers are increasingly going online to check social networking sites before meeting potential candidates. Make sure your online profile, from your blog to your likes and dislikes on Facebook are professional enough not to be embarrassing if your future employer sees it.
- Keep learning new skills – Melanie Slade, Theo Walcott’s girlfriend, is not letting her WAG title get the best of her and is keen to keep up with her education. Studying to be a physiotherapist as well as being a model, the girl has her feet firmly on the ground. Continuingly learning new skills that can be added to your CV, such as learning a new language, can prove beneficial in the work place and increase your value to a prospective employer.
- Know your true worth – Christine Bleakley, girlfriend of Frank Lampard, is a well known TV presenter and knows her true value when it comes to working on the One Show. She was reported to have been paid £100,000 a year presenting with Adrian Chiles and was locked into a negotiation over her deal after he left the show. Researching the salary bracket of the job you want will enable you to be knowledgeable about what is expected of you and for you...and don’t forget to negotiate!
