In January we polled visitors to SimplyHired.co.uk about their career plans for 2010 and found that work/life balance will be a major theme. Thirty-six percent of you ranked work/life balance above salary (31%) as the most important consideration when looking for a new job. Furthermore, 40% of you cite improving work/life balance as a top career resolution for 2010.
There is no argument that it’s been a stressful 18 months full of redundancies and cutbacks. Whether it is more time at the pub with friends, more time with little ones at home, a long holiday or a long lunch, this new data underscores our desire to reassess priorities and reclaim life outside of work as the recession comes to an end.
We also asked about career goals for 2010 and found the vast majority of you (81%) want to find a job you love, followed by 10% of you who want a payrise or promotion and 4% of you who are just hoping to avoid redundancy. You were divided on what is the most important consideration when looking for a new job. Here is the complete breakdown:
• Work/life balance: 36%
• Competitive salary: 31%
• Training opportunities: 27%
• Ability to travel: 3%
• CSR initiatives: 1%
Sixty-six percent of you made a New Years’ resolution that relates to your career this year, and your favourite resolutions were:
• Improve my work/life balance: 40%
• Learn a new language or skill: 16%
• Expand my professional network: 14%
• Volunteer to lead a company project: 6%
• Find a mentor: 4%
• Become active in an industry organisation: 4%
Thanks to everyone who participated in our January survey and cheers to a great career in 2010!
